What you see now began with a sketch on a napkin …

one quiet moment where imagination tapped me on the shoulder and said,

“Pay attention.”

The kind of sketch that arrives like a nudge from somewhere bigger than you.

From that tiny beginning,

Memère’ Luziane started taking shape …

not all at once,

but in whispers and revelations.

Each mark,

each hidden symbol

felt less like something I was adding

and more like something she was revealing.

Before long, she was no longer just a painting…

she was a keeper of stories,

a reflection of home,

and a tribute to the creative roots

that run deep through Acadiana.

those quiet nods to music, movement, land, lineage,

and the artists who’ve kept our culture alive for 50 years.

I’ve come to believe that beauty lives in the layers…

the kind that invite you to lean closer,

to wonder,

to remember.

That’s how I created Cady Ana.

She isn’t just a pelican…

she’s a love letter to our Acadiana.

From the glimmer of zydeco in her eyes

to the steeples of St. John’s Cathedral in her hair,

Cady Ana celebrates a region where faith, food, family, and folklore

are woven into everyday beauty.

Her feet map the distance between Louisiana and Nova Scotia.

Her beak is filled with Gulf Coast treasures…

crabs, shrimp, crawfish, and a pinch of spice.

You’ll also find magnolias, music, alligators, recipes, roots.

Some hidden.

Some obvious.

All of it intentional.

A visual key is included to help you spot

what’s tucked within her plumes,

but part of the joy is letting her unfold slowly.

She’s not just art.
She’s a memory map of home.

soft olive, deep moss, tender jade…
as if creation were catching its breath.

Gradually…

the outline of something familiar appears.
There…

two gentle ears, hidden in the fold of fronds and earth.

A donkey…

Not grand or noble by the world’s measure,
but steady.

Steady enough to carry a King.

And isn’t that how He always comes?
Not in fanfare or flashing light,
but in humility,
on borrowed feet,
through the back gate of our hearts.

If you look a little higher,
a palm tree leans into view…

its fronds lifted like worship.

In ancient times,

the palm leaf was a symbol

of victory, peace, and eternal life.
People waved them not just in celebration,
but in recognition of something holy.

And that brown crown peeking through the upper edge of the painting…
not a golden one.
No jewels.
Just a quiet reminder:
This is the King of a different kind of kingdom.

Look closer still.
That white robe isn’t painted smooth…
it’s layered with torn, textured paper.
Woven together like linen and Spirit.
Because nothing about His story was polished.
It was handmade.

Honest.

Holy.

Palm Sunday marks the beginning

of the most unexpected procession in history.
Not into a palace,

but into surrender.
Not toward power,

but toward sacrifice.

And yet…

through it all…

He was inviting us to new life.

That’s what I felt while painting this piece.
Not planning it…

but discovering it.
Letting each shade and texture reveal

what had already been whispered into being.

And now, I wonder…

what do you see?

Maybe it’s not just a painting.
Maybe it’s a doorway.
A memory stirring.
A moment resurfacing from somewhere eternal.

A King is coming.
Still riding low.
Still cloaked in mercy.
Still offering peace where the world offers noise.

A quiet summons

cloaked in verdant hues—

alive and present.

It breathes softly,

inviting reflection and peace.

The stillness of Louisiana’s marshland meets the soft, open sky,

and time seems to pause.

It’s here,

amidst this tranquil beauty,

that a pair of mallards takes flight…

graceful, timeless, and filled with stories

waiting to be uncovered.

Mallards on the Mermantau

is more than a painting;

it’s an invitation to step into

this serene Southern scene.

Through layers of collage, ink, acrylics, oils, and pastels,

I sought to bring the heart of the Mermantau to life…

not just as a landscape,

but as a soulful experience.

If you look closely,

you’ll find hidden treasures within the piece.

The drake,

following just behind her,

carries the bayou’s stories with him.

His wings shimmer with dragonfly patterns,

and deep in his thoughts,

a bullfrog leisurely backstrokes…

a playful nod to the whimsical side of nature.

In his belly,

a speckled trout,

a sportsman’s dream,

reminds us of the richness of the waters below.

Ahead,

the hen leads with quiet elegance.

Her wings hold subtle layers of meaning…

blossoms blooming in her heart,

the spirit of A Little Princess tucked beneath her flight,

and the flutter of butterflies

that seem to lift her above

the worries of this world.

Together,

they glide through a creamy sky

dotted with daisies,

as if nature itself couldn’t resist

adding a bit of charm to their journey.

Every detail in this painting

is a story waiting to unfold…

a reflection of the South’s quiet beauty,

its resilience,

and its joy.

May it invite you to linger,

to look again,

and to discover something new each time.

As I worked on “Mallards on the Mermantau”,

I thought about the quiet magic of the South…

the way the marsh hushes the world,

the way flight feels like freedom,

the way certain moments make us pause,

just to take it all in.

I pray this piece holds those moments

and carries the sweetness of memories

made in the South,

the whisper of hidden treasures,

and the beauty of simply being.

woven from the earth itself,

rich with the textures of life.

They are found in the threads

that hold things together,

in the simple beauty

of what has been gathered,

shaped, and redeemed.

I created her to be seen

as an angel of presence,

not pretense.

Formed from layers of handmade papers,

threads, droplets of ink, and golden paints,

she carries the marks of a life fully lived…

imperfect, textured, deeply real.

There is no extravagance here,

only the quiet richness of what endures.

Her golden halo tilts…

a quiet nod in knowing

the deeper truths of this earthly life.

Her wings…

full and majestic, feel ancient…

like they hold the prayers of generations past,

whispered on the wind, carried in the light.

Her heart…

a touch of turquoise…

a color of protection, healing, and truth.

Like rivers carving through desert stone,

like sky meeting earth,

turquoise emanates the bridge

between heaven and humanity.

It is her essence,

her song.

She is both guardian and guide,

whispering…

You are held in something

greater than yourself.”

A Prayer for Earth Angels

Lord, let this angel be a reminder
that we are never alone,
never forgotten,
never without the touch of heaven.

May we see the beauty in what has been woven together—
in the broken made whole,
in the scattered made sacred,
in the ordinary made divine.

Like the tilt of her halo,
let us wear our journeys with grace.
Like the turquoise at her heart,
let us be a refuge for others.
Like the gold that surrounds her,
let us shine with the light of Your love.

And when we forget,

in the wind, in the earth, in the quiet presence of an angel near.

somewhere you didn’t plan to go.

That’s exactly what happened with this piece…

a 12 x 16″ mixed-media portrait of Chief Red Cloud.

I’ve painted him several time before…

but this time, the colors felt different…

Softer….A little more whimsical.

I found myself reaching for hues I don’t usually associate with in the Natives’ Collection…

pinks, light blues, and iridescent pearls.

And then there was the lavender haze.

It happened almost instinctively…

a brushstroke across the lower half of his face

that suddenly resembled a 5 o’clock shadow.

Stepping back, squinting at the painting…

“Well, that’s new,” I thought, tilting my head.

Did Native Americans have facial hair?

I’d always pictured their faces smooth and serene,

like the photographs and sculptures that echo their legacy.

But now, here was Red Cloud,

sporting a hint of stubble…

and my curiosity was officially piqued.

It turns out, facial hair among Native Americans was rare,

and when it appeared, they often plucked or scraped it away.

The smoothness was a part of their cultural identity,

a deliberate choice.

But here, with this lavender-tinted shadow,

Red Cloud felt different.

Playful, maybe.

Or perhaps just a reminder that art

doesn’t always follow the rules.

When painting the Natives,

I’m so inspired by their creativity …

the way their art isn’t confined to canvas or walls

but woven into their lives.

Even their clothes were walking masterpieces…

adorned with beadwork and textures that told stories.

Their tools and pottery were works of ingenuity…

blending function with beauty.

Every creation seemed to honor the world around them…

a world they treated with reverence,

as a sacred gift from God.

I like to think that Chief Red Cloud walked deeply 

with that kind of connection…

the way a simple brushstroke can spark questions…

with curiosity…

and a deeper understanding of the beauty around us.

As his eyes closed in the painting…

his expression seemed to whisper wisdom:

find strength in stillness…

honor the journey…

and embrace life’s unexpected moments…

even the lavender ones.

So here he is,

Red Cloud with a Shadow.

A playful twist on a revered figure,

wrapped in whimsy and wonder.

Does it make you giggle, or does it make you think?

Perhaps a little of both.

Lord, may this piece remind us to embrace both our strength and our humanity,

to find joy in the imperfections

and humor in the unexpected.

As Chief Red Cloud once led with wisdom and grace,

guided by Your light.

hope in Your promises,
and a deep sense of purpose in every moment.

Cady Ana,

the belle of the ball…
dressed in layers of quiet beauty and mystery,
waiting to capture the heart of someone
who truly understands the magic I hold inside.
I may look like just another pelican
flying across Louisiana’s skies,
but take a closer look…
and you’ll find that I am much more than I seem.

My feathers?
They’re not just feathers…
they are the heartbeats of Acadiana…
each one holding memories
of the bayou, the people, the food, and the music
that make this place so special.

You see, I wasn’t always this majestic.
I was created with love,
crafted by the hand of my whimsical maker…

Every part of me tells a story…

my hair is made of Southern magnolias, ACA ticket stubs,

and the steeples of St. John’s Cathedral.

My crown, a reminder of the beauty and history of this land.

My eyes?

Oh, they shimmer with the spirit of zydeco,

of every person in this community.

As I prepare for this fairytale ball,

I can’t help but feel the excitement in the air.

The festival crowds are dancing along the blue bayou…

and the Virgin Mary watches over us all

from its shimmering waters.

I am surrounded by everything

that makes Acadiana feel like home…

the fiddles, the food, the music, and the people.

I feel so alive…

so ready to share all of this with someone

who truly understands me.

I’m searching for my Prince Charming

and/or Lady Enchanting…

the one who will appreciate the magic

in my wings and the love in my heart.

I long for a new nest,

a place where I can rest

and continue to inspire all who see me,

just as the colors and textures of Acadiana

have inspired me.

I’ve spent so much time flying,

so many years discovering the hidden treasures within my feathers,

and now, I’m ready to find a place to call home…

someone who will cherish me for all I am.

So, here I stand,

the bell of the ball…

waiting for the one who will see the beauty in me…

the one who will understand

that I am not just a pelican,

but a story…

a memory…

and a piece of Acadiana’s soul.

that unlatched the door 

into a whole new world. 

Seventeen years ago,

I came across a photo of a woman taken by Carol Beckwith.

She is from an African tribe –

The Wodaabe of Niger

and is captured walking across the hot desert

while carrying her precious child.

Many who would attempt to walk in her shoes

would become destitute and hopeless.

I was captivated by her intense focus

which led me down a rabbit hole in creating

my very first mixed media piece…

leftover cans of house paint were unsealed…

peacock feathers from vases quickly plucked…

and a huge tug on my heart

was waiting to be unleashed… 

All coming together

with a bit of glue to create this vision.

She became my wave breaker 

who helped me realize…

who I am created

to be

as an artist…

Mixing

medias with visions

and bringing them together  

in one place

for all to experience

what was once unseen.

Each piece of artwork has become time spent

in His presence …
a safe place and true escape

from the messiness of this world .

I am so thankful for the visions

that breathe life into everyday moments.

Taking moments that seem

hopeless and dark

and painting a picture

of hope and light.

WHO IS SHE?

She is His.

Her children are His

and their children are His.

She has an impenetrable focus

on the One she adores.

She trust in Him so.

that she “balances” her life around Him.

She knows that He will take her

and her child to the other side… 

One step 

at at time. 

She does not ponder her surroundings 

but pushes through

from Glory to Glory. 

He has provided her

with ALL she needs

and will not stop. 

She wears a bowl

on her head

to receive His continual blessings

which will be passed on to others

who come to receive.

Her deadly desert

has been turned

into her sea of Life,

Her Oasis.

Her naked trees

have veen filled with His Glory

and cover her

in the heat of the day. 

She endures. 

She prays. 

She loves. 

She is His!

The African woman and the photographer are inspirations to me.

Just had to put it into the world in which I see her in and strive to be in myself.

Prayer:

May we keep our eyes on the One

who will keep us from sinking in the seen world

and May our faith grow to know His promises

will raise us above our circumstances.

Praying for all the lost to return home

to the love of our Almighty Father.

an image surfaced…

overflowing with hearts 

in a monotone color scheme .

A gentle nudge

in my spirit

hinted

that this would be for someone

who touches hearts

on a daily basis.

…

Within a week’s timing,

a call came in

from a gifted therapist and friend

asking  if I would be interested

in creating a large painting

for her waiting room.

I knew God

was up to something good

and immediately accepted the opportunity.

Cheryl Evans,

a licensed counselor,

is in the business

of guiding hearts back

to Hope.

She is known for helping people

find their way back

to the fullness of their being.

She has touched many a heart

and I knew that this vision

was meant for her.

Life

can sometimes distract

and cover up

our heart’s treasure ‘chest’…

a chest waiting to be found…

filled with Hope, purpose and a plan…

This piece represents the archaeological dig

to uncover each heart’s truth …

one by one…

I loved the idea

of scraping

through the thick layers of paint

(cue the world’s distractions)

to reveal a simple heart.

The underpainting layers

breaking through

in a symphony

singing in greens and blues…

symbolizing life and peace

have been reclaimed!

Then there’s that little golden heart…

the One that sits so humbly within…

always waiting

to be discovered again.

That my dear friend,

your Golden heart has been found!

through all the layers of life’s journey!

‘BOUTANOUR’ AWAY

‘BOUTANOUR…

(pronounced… bout-an-hour)

It is a term, I remember using as a child

to describe the distance from home

to our desired destination…  

It always seemed to take

approximately

ONE HOUR

to get

groceries, clothing, movies, friends,

anything!

“How long does it take?”

‘BOUTANOUR!

Taking loooooooong car rides

was what we did

when living

in the middle of nowhere…

YA’ DRIVE!!!

I’d tag along with my parents

and all of their friends,

as a 3rd wheel

…

Everyone would meet up

at some ‘LOCAL’ restaurant

which

was always

“BOUTANOUR away!

I was thoroughly entertained

watching the grown ups

having  a grand time

eating, drinking and sometimes

a little dancing

would slip into the mix

if a jukebox was in the house.  

By the end of the night,

the tablecloth became my makeshift duvet

and we would snuggle up together

until it was time

to take

the loooooooong drive

back home

….

In those days…

the security of seat belts

was not yet

‘realized’

and as a pencil thin kid,

the best seat in the house

was calling my name

...

which was the back shelf

of the car

overlooking

the metallic rear deck…

aka..

the trunk

with a picture window

that had a view

to die for,

literally…

I COULD’VE DIED!

Thanks be to God…

I didn’t then!

Snug as a bobble headed bug

on the rear car rug…

it was stargazing at its best.

So many nights,

I drifted off into the

Land of Questions…  

Where does the world end?  

How many stars are in the universe?

Who made all of this vastness of wonder?  

Looking out of that window,

driving along the dark Arkansas highway

and seeing the giant–ness around

was the closest definition to Infinity

that I’ve ever come to know.

This artwork is a tribute

to the limitless nature of our Maker.  

It reminds me of the

twinkling heavenly hosts

on those many curious nights…

all coming together

to help paint a picture

of the ONE

who created us all.  

I used to make pictures

with the stars in my mind…  

they became my bedtime stories

to help me pass the time

on those loooooooong drives home

which happened to be

…
